Tavira is located 30 kilometres east of Faro, and is undoubtedly amongst the most beautiful towns in the Algarve region.
The architecture and cultural heritage is a mix of Roman, Arab and Christian. The old seven arched bridge links the two parts of the town across the river Gilão, and is believed to be of Roman origin. Walking through the old streets, you can still see the remains of the Islamic wall, but the best view is had by climbing the castle tower, where you can look out over the wavy roofs, church domes, river and salt flats, to see the beautiful blue of the Atlantic ocean out on the horizon.
